RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
